The Republic of Sudan falls on the fringe of the great African desert and has been strongly affected by the desertification of east and west Africa especially during the last decade. The establishment of IGAD and other international regional and local efforts to alleviate the effects of this phenomenon are well known worldwide .The government of Sudan has along–standing battle against the effects of desertification and many part of the country have been hit by many years of poor rainfall

This has caused wide shortages  of cereals produced for local consumption especially in the rural areas.
